As per new guidelines, an OCI applicant applying for either Fresh OCI Card or OCI Miscellaneous Service, has to upload all the requisite documents (self-attested), in support of OCI claim while applying/filling up online application on website: https://passport.gov.in/oci/. (Details given below)


  1. i) Applicant has to make an online registration for OCI Card at website: www.mha.nic.in.  Or https://passport.gov.in/oci/submitAppDetails.  He/she has to submit to the Consulate computer generated application form, bearing registration number, photo and signatures (exactly in the box) at the appropriate places. 

  2. ii)One photo to be pasted on Application Form and the other has to be attached with it.  Click Photo for knowing specifications of it;

  1. iii)Self-attested copy of Foreign Passport held;

  2. iv)Self attested copy of Unabridged Birth Certificate of the applicant;

  3. v)Self attested copy of Unabridged Birth Certificate of the parents, if parents were  Indian national/s and OCI is claimed based on Indian descent;

  4. vi)Proof of the applicant or parents/grandparents having Indian nationality/Indian descent, such as Indian Passport, School leaving certificate, birth certificate, land holding in India, etc. issued by Govt of India.  If the same is in any regional language then a translated copy in English by an authorised translator with Name and signatures bearing his stamp containing address and his licence number.

  5. vii)In cases, where the applicant’s father/grand father or great grand father arrived in South Africa by Ship, then he/she may seek the help of Department of Achieves in South Africa.  You can also access their records at www.national.archives.gov.za, for guidance for accessing the website).

  6. viii)Self attested copy of Naturalisation Certificate, if applicable;

  7. ix)Self attested copy of Indian Passport Surrender Certificate and copy of cancelled passport, if the same was surrendered.  Please note that the names should be exact in all the documents, otherwise if the spelling are different, a letter has to be obtained from the concerned Home Department that the persons mentioned in the document/s are same;

  8. x)Self attested copy of Marriage certificate of the applicant and copy of the foreign passport of the spouse;

  9. xi)A fee of Rand 4440/- per application (fee is same for adult as well as child applicant).  Applicant can deposit fee by cash or EFT.  The banking details are mentioned on our website;

  10. xii)Proof of Residential address in South Africa which can be any utility bill, copy of lease agreement, copy of property/etc;

  11. xiii)Original passports/ documents would be returned after verification.

  12. xiv)Any other document as specified by the Consular Officer;


Please note that for the purpose of claiming OCI, husband and wife has to claim on the strength of their own parents/grand parents i.e. husband cannot claim OCI on the basis of his wife and vice versa.  OCI Card is a life-long visa.

Once the applicant submits the complete application including these uploads, the originals of the supporting documents have to be submitted to the Indian Mission/Post for verification.

“Conversion to PIO card to OCI card is free of cost. Deadline for the conversion from PIO cards to OCI card is June 30, 2016. Applicants may visit at  www.passport.gov.in/oci  and under OCI registration, select the  OCI Registration (in lieu of Valid PIO-Card)”.
