The newly upgraded Indian Cultural Centre (ICC), Johannesburg started its activities since May, 2011 in new premises at ARTA HOUSE, 110 Jan Smuts, 8 NEW PORT ROAD, PARKWOOD. The Centre functions under the overall supervision of the Consulate General of India, Johannesburg and the High Commission of India, Pretoria and is headed by a Director.

The ICC Johannesburg is the representative body of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, New Delhi (ICCR), the apex body for conducting India's cultural relations with other countries. The ICCR has its Cultural Centres world wide engaged in promoting and propagating Indian culture and building relations between India and rest of the world through showcasing our oldest and diversified culture in terms of performing arts and academic inputs of our cultural heritage.


The main objective of ICC are as follows:-

  1. To promote Indian culture in its widest sense in South Africa.
  2. To disseminate culture-related information aimed at a better understanding of India.
  3. To foster closer links between India and South Africa through cultural exchanges.
  4. To offer ICCR's Scholarships to South African citizens to study a wide range of courses including Music and dance at tertiary level in various Universities/ Institutions in India.

Activities

The Center has steadily increased its range of activities and from its inception has focused on the following activities to develop a dynamic profile.
  1. Interaction and co-operation with South African cultural and academic institutions/organisations, impresarios, publishers, schools and the Indian Community. The ICC has sought encouragement, advice and support from them for promoting Indian art and culture in South Africa.

  2. Co-ordination of performances and the movement of ICCR sponsored Artists in the region and organizing performances in Johannesburg as well as other cities in South Africa under its jurisdiction in collaboration with Indian and South African Cultural Associations/ organizations etc.

  3. Offering its own in-house activities comprising of Music and Dance, photographic and painting exhibitions, workshops, film shows and lecture demonstrations with scholars on different subjects as well as regular classes in disciplines like Hindustani Vocal Music, Yoga, Tabla, Kathak Dance and Hindi language.

  4. Presently the Indian Cultural Centre has two India based teachers and three local teachers. The India based teachers impart training in Hindustani Classical singing and Yoga disciplines and local teachers impart training in Kathak dance, Tabla and Hindi language at ICC to large number of South African, Indian and other nationals. Interested persons may contact the Centre for registration in the classes.

  5. The ICC organises various cultural events in collaboration with local cultural organisations. The Centre also offers a platform in the form of an amphitheater stage at its premises to all the local cultural organisations for conducting cultural events.     The Centre opens from Tuesday-Saturday from 9.00hrs to 5.30hrs except public holidays.
